so if my living room is 203 inches by 131 inches my square footage would be 184.6?

Correct, length times width equals square footage of a room. If the room is L shaped, you can break the space down into several different squares or rectangles. You may want to measure in inches, to figure out the total square inches, then divide that by 144 to figure out how many square feet.

Well, if the room is square or rectangular, then its just the width by the height, in feet (remember, take the number of inches extra and divide by 12 to get a decimal fraction of a foot).
If the room is funny shaped, like an L or C, you have to add up all the area of the different rectangles there to get the square footage.
Lets say you have an L shaped room, and each branch is 6' long and 4' wide. That means you have one space that's 4' x 4' square, right at the middle of the L, and two branches that are 2' x 4', one to the right and one to the top. 4x4 is 16 sq. ft. 2x4 is 8 sq. ft. times 2 is 16 sq. ft, meaning the room is 32 sq. ft.

Yes, it is easy. Measure length of one wall and width of the next wall touching the length you just measured. multiply the two numbers for square footage.
Example 20ft long x 15ft wide = 300 square feet

Get as many people with square feet as you can find and have them stand in the room you want to measure. When no one else will fit, count how many feet there are. That will tell you the square footage there is.
