We were first advised that a "rod" had gone bad in our hot water heater but replacing the unit did no good. Nobody else in our neighborhood has had any smelly water (we have town water, not a well) and neither have we except for this odor when towels are used.

Do you use fabric softener on your towels?

If you do, over time the wax form the fabric softener builds up on the towels themselves and repels the soap and water you are using to wash them. They are not actually getting clean even though they look like they are. That could be where the smell is coming from.

If this is the problem new towels are the best option, however, I have had luck with using lemon juice in the rinse cycle, the citrus acid eventually breaks down the wax build up, however that more then one or two washings to do this. And if you have very heavy pile towels you need to use at least a cup each time.

I live in a high humidity area, so towels are always the 1st thing to get a dank odor. This mainly because they trap water which results in mildew. This is easily remedied by sunning the towels before the wash cycle and after.

Are these towels old or have these towels set overnight before drying?
If you have left the load of clothes in the washer overnight, you need to rewash them and w/i 4 hours, wash them.
Otherwise, you need to put 2 cups of lemon juice in your washer without clothes for a cycle.

Don't leave you towels in the washer for too long. When the cycle is done, immediately put them in the dryer. If I leave my towels in to long, they get a weird smell.

If your other clothes are OK, it must be the towels, not the washer. If they have a musty smell, it may be that you're not getting them completely dry.

Try oxyclean. It works great. Make sure you put it in first, though. If it sticks to fabric, it turns blue and stains the fabric permanently.

It could be the detergent you are using. Change it up for a bit and see if that works.
