Lawyers do not generally charge flat rates. They charge by the hour, or, if they are suing someone, they will charge 1/3 of the final settlement amount.

If they are charging by the hour, the rate is generally not related to the type of case. So the fact that it is a DWI will not make a difference. A good lawyer can cost anywhere from $100 to $350 an hour, plus expenses for filing, making copies, and other related items. Lawyers are not cheap, but, unfortunately, unless you are intimately familiar with the law regarding your case, you pretty much need one.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, the state will provide one for you free of charge. Some of these lawyers can be quite good, however they are not always the best.

Depending on the lawyer and where you live. My friend paid $800.00 for fees and time. The lawyer met with him, went to court with him, and informed him of what to do. He also spoke to the DA for plea deals.

Good luck. . .

Don't drive drunk!

It varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and whether you're going to plead guilty or not. You may have to pay a retianer initially or you'll be charged hourly.
