I would really like to know of some exotic animal rescue places, but I am also interested in some regular cat and dog rescue organizations. Anyone know of some or a site that has a list?

Also look into petfinder. You enter your zip code and a ton of animal rescue places will come up in your area. You can then contact each on independently to see what they have up for adoption.

There aren't too many 'exotic animal' rescue organizations that will rescue out. Usually these are animals that never should have been in a home environment in the first place, so they go to a sanctuary of some sort.

Your four options would be to

start your own 'sanctuary', but you'd probably have to have licensing and adequate facilities as judged by the USDA.

Become active in a local animal resuce group. This way if an exotic animal comes in that they would usually have to turn away, you could offer to take it. But again, know what you are getting into. These are animals that have been abused, mistreated, and are probably not healthy. Having a 2 bedroom house in Jersey isn't going to cut it for a chimp, a wildcat, or an alligator. Aside from the fact that it's probably against city codes.

The third thing I could think of would be to check out the 'classified' section on petfinders. People who can no longer handle their pets but don't want to relinquish them to a shelter will place ads on there.

Last, petfinder has several sections, including horses, pigs, reptiles, and small & furry. The small & furry section includes things like chinchillas, hedgehogs, skunks, ferrets, and sugar gliders - in additional to the tradtional hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs.

This isn't adopting an exotic, but you could also volunteer your time with an exotics sanctuary. This way you could be helping them without having to take on all the responsibility.

Again, I stress that rescuing an exotic animal should not be done simply because the animal is cool and will impress your friends. You probably will not be able to own any other pets. Your life schedule will be uprooted. Care costs can be astronomical.

Good luck to you.
