I think the saying is actually supposed to be more like "It's always in the last place you THINK to look." Because when I lose something, once I find it, I always think how did that get there?

I think it is a "save face" manuveur when you have looked for hours only to have your friend find it for you in a least logical place, like your loo or fridge, which it totally embarrssing for them!
