We're expanding to 10 teams this year & can't figure out how to structure the league. The 2 sticking points are playoff structure and payouts. Some say 6 playoff teams with a bye for the top 2, but byes kinda suck. Some say 8 teams but then the reg. season is trivialized. Along with that, we used to have nearly all the prize money going to Super Bowl winner, but most want the regular season to mean something. We proposed going to 2 divisions with 25% going to each reg. season division champ and 50% to the Super Bowl winner. Plus we have been using Yahoo's free league but the expansion creates an unbalanced schedule if we don't do divisions, but you can't do divisions without upgrading to Plus league, which is not an option. Someone please structure our league!!

I'm the commish in a 10 team league. We do a four team playoff. The #1 vs #4 and the #2 vs #3. Then winner vs winner for the title. Payouts: The regular season points leader gets their entry money back. Regardless of playoffs or not. (Sometimes that guy gets screwed) Then its 75% to the winner and 25% to the 2nd place guy. Only pride and a bronze trophy on your Yahoo profile for third.

Last year, my league expanded to 10 teams from 8, and it was worth it. I don't know what kind of money your league is throwing around, but if it's more per owner than what the PLUS upgrade is ($125), I suggest upgrading. Having divisions makes for even more fun. There are also many great things about playing in a PLUS league, like stat-tracker (no more looking at other sites on Sundays), and there are also many other benefits equally as impressive, such as a more balanced schedule with divisions. Now, in reference to the playoff structure, with 6 teams, one will usually be under .500, so if you went only 4 teams, quite a few teams will be out of contention weeks before the season is over. 8 teams in the postseason is a bad idea, because of the reason you gave. We payout 7 different ways this season (we now have expanded to 12), but last year our payout was about 60% to 1st, 15% to 2nd, 10% to 3rd (with 6 teams in playoffs, there is still a 3rd place game), 10% went to the PLUS and the rest went to the team with the highest single week point total. All things considered, I think your league is on the right track. Your payouts are a good idea, get PLUS if you can and 6 teams in the playoffs is perfect.

I run a 12 team league and we only let 4 teams into the play-offs. It is a competitive 3-player keeper league and we have lost only 3 owners in 4 seasons.

4 teams is more than enough from a 10 team regular season. 50% to Superbowl winner, 35% to Superbowl loser and 15% to the highest scoring team from all the losers in that last week-end - everyone can win $$$ in the last week.

Can't recommend an answer for the division problem - upgrade to a better web-site, maybe.

Good luck.
