I'm not an expert or anything, but these are some steps I tried when I was still using Windows 98, before I upgraded to a new computer. As far as antivirus software, McAfee and Norton are both good.
1. Pop-up blockers are automatic with Windows XP. If you do have Windows XP, you have to change the setting to "Do not install Active X controls." That prevents most pop-ups.
3. To check the Active X controls, go to Tools and look at your Internet Options. Under the General tab you will find the place to set your homepage. You can also delete the cookies and history, as well as temporary webpages that are stored on your machine on this tab. Go through the other tabs and make sure the settings are correct for the type of Internet usage you need. If you need help, try the Microsoft website.
4. If you have lots of things on your Startup Menu, you may need to remove them. Or, if you have downloaded lots of games or toolbars, you may want to remove those as well.
5. You can also run a disk cleanup. Locate the System Tools on Window's Accessories. That may help you get rid of things like screensavers and extras you don't use.
Like I said, I'm no expert, just a normal user. If you need more help, you could try calling a techie friend or a local business that deals with such issues regularly. They can take you through the process step-by-step and help you to clean up whatever is causing the problem.

Well the first thing you need to do is relax a little and then provide more information. You see computer viruses and hacking are not a major nightmare if you know what you're doing.
I will start by answering you questions/concerns:
1) Best Antivirus? It is really subjective, I like Norton but there is also Mcaffee
2) Homepage? Choose the one you like really...No problems there. An don't be paranoid!
3) Your computer is slow? That can be anything. Make sure you follow these guidelines:
-Upgrade your computer (buy a new one every 3 to 5 years)
-Assuming you have Windows XP, make sure you have SP2 (or service Pack 2) which is an update from Microsoft. To get turn on Windows update.
-Download the latest Antispy from Microsoft (called Defender). Run it and scan your somputer on a regular basis
-Defragment your computer at least one a month
===================
Protective measures:
- Do NOT open any email you don't know the source. Do NOT be curious!
-Do NOT open attachments from someone you don't know
-Do NOT open suspicious attachments even from your friend because their computers might be infected!
Good luck!

try to uninstall and reinstall all your programs on your pc. Start from scratch.A norton 2006 antivirus is available and a yahoo pop-up blocker. Try not to download programs via internet coz there are some programs that once downloaded can automatically alter the settings on your pc without you knowing it, thus can make your connection slow, etc.

I agree with all the knowledgeable people out here. But, I get this feeling your browser is also being hijacked - that's why your home page keeps changing. There's a program called HijackThis - it will help you. You can download it from :
http://www.spychecker.com/download/download_hijackthis.html
But remember, whether it's running the anti-virus, anti-spyware or any other programs mentioned by the others, do it in the Safe Mode. That will ensure better results.

The best thing to do, is to get a friend of yours who knows how install windows, and set windows up. Get him/her to install a fresh copy of windows for you.
You will need to remember Popup Blocker and Antivirus software are only their to help you minimize the bad experience, they will never guarantee you from virus or Internet spam.

i use ad aware. it works for me. so hopefullt it will work for you.
go to tools, and then internet options. check to see if the yahoo URL is typed in on your homepage.
you prob need ot just run an ad or virus scan. also, try and empty your recycle bin, make sure you have no unwanted temporary files, and if you are downloaded music, that is a nother reason why it may be running slower.
hope this helped!

You have obviously got loads of spyware and trojans in your computer. I suggest that you go to http://www.comodo.com and download their FREE Antivirus and Firewall and install them. The Antivirus will help protect your computer from viruses, trojans and spywares and the Firewall will help you to stop trojans and other spywares to connect to the internet and also protect you from external threats.
