watch out for fats....and cholesterol. peanut butter and cheeses/dairy are loaded with fats. unfortunately your best source of nonmeat proteins are legumes...beans. You need to choose....beans or lean meats. You'll need to eat plenty of beans daily to keep up the amount of protein you need. You also need to inform your doctor that you don't eat meat. It can definitely affect the baby so be careful.

I eat red meat all the time, but was told that beans (especially ones that i buy dried and cook myself) are a fantastic source of protien and the best substitute for meat. I went to my local health clinic, and have received ALOT of help with my diet. Including food vouchers, cook books, and lots of one on one coversation with a doctor that knows all about that sort of stuff. I highly suggest doing the same.

Beans are a great source of protein, as well as fish (probably shouldn't eat it more than once a week though b/c of the pregnancy; you may want to check that with your Dr.). Also, many green vegetables are a good source of protien at well such as artichokes, eggplant, greens, zuccini, broccoli, etc. Nuts are another way to get the protien you need. :-)

At your GNC store or at the local Wal-Mart there is a muscle building powder that mixes with skim milk called Whey Protien. This is a pretty good source of protien.

Fish has protien in it but you have to watch how much you of that because of the Mercury. Sounds to be like you are going to have to suck it up and eat some meat. And besides you shouldnt be worrying about you and the fact that you don't eat meat, it is your baby that you should be worrying about and what it needs.

Turkey, any fish (especially salmon), nuts of any kind. Cereals are now fortified with iron as most hot cereals. Just check the packages for any sign of increased iron and protien, also ensure drinks or any meal replacement drink along with protien powder that can be added to almost anything. good luck.

I was in the same boat when I was pregnant. Try fish - just not too much because of the high mercury levels. Protein bars & shakes made me nauseous just thinking about them. Beans, yogurt, vegetarian proteins like veggie burgers & hot dogs. Some of the vegetarian chicken products are good too - Morning Star Farms.
Good luck!!!

stick with what you have mentioned. i was having almost a total aversion to all meat at one point in my pregnancy and i asked my dr about drinking some protien shakes.
she advised me to not take the shakes and just get my protein from other places, like the alternatives you mentioned in your question.
also, add fish to your list. fish and seafood are good sources of o-3 fatty acids and protein. just steer clear of the big fish, like tuna, swordfish, etc b/c of their high levels of mercury!

also, snack on some assorted nuts and don't forget your dairy holds a lot of protein too! cheese, milk, yogurt, etc...

take care!

Pork is another option. My wife just made a lean loin last night and it was fabulous. There are literally thousands of possibilities if you do not want to eat red meat.
