Real Estate usually goes up in value and is a good hedge against inflation. If you only own one house and it does not go up but stays the same, you still come out ahead with all the tax savings you have been getting over the years.

In my opinion, it's the only place you'll eventually get a true pretty close to a sure thing return on your money and if done right a really good return on it!
The security of your own place, you can do anything you want with it (generally speaking), you have a source of equity if an emergency comes up or someday want to send your kids to college ... there are a million different reasons!
:)
