/ = forward slash
\ = back slash
However, i think your question is more related to where and why do you use them.
In a URL, they mean go forward or go back to.
Actually it doesn't make much difference which one you use there though the forward is used to move in the Net; while the back slash is used to navigate inside your computer.

\ is the backslash because the top of it moves "back" toward the other letters. I used to get confused on this myself until I figured that part out.

If it leans to the left, it is a backslash, and if it leans to the front, it is a foreward slash. I don't know why, though.
