I'm trying to decide if I should go with Vonage and why they sell routers. If I bought a router at Circuit City, would it act the same way the Vonage bought router would?

Well they provide the same functionality as a standard router - plus more. So the vonage router is intended to act as your primary router, but in addition to the standard internet data access it terminates VoIP calls. So if you just buy a "standard" router it won't work with your vonage service.

BTW, I don't use mine for data, wireless or wired data access, because the vonage software image can be pretty unstable. So I just let it handle my vonage service and use other devices for my data.

I have Vonage and their router. I don't know if it's the same as other routers or not. I do know Vonage says plugging your router into wall jacks could damage your router. So the telephone must stay attached to your computer.

All Modem/Routers work the same way. the one from Vonage may just be pre configured that's all. Good luck!
