well you don't say if the beaker re-sets OK afterwards but it sounds like the switch is shorting. Flip the breaker off and change the switch. Keep an eye on the breaker because they do get weaker when tripped over and over again. Don't wait too long, you have a potential fire hazard on your hands. Even if you don't use the light.

It is most likely a short due to water damage. First check your roof and gutters for leaks and debris. A stick stuck in the wrong place can lead water to the wrong place. Repair the water damage. Replace the wiring and/or the fixture if it is old and cracked. Check for rodent damage, mice may have chewed the wires. If that is the case get a cat, or electronic sonic rodent chaser (5 bucks at Home Depot). Otherwise you may be haunted.......

It could be a pinched wire
If it is a very shallow fixture a screw used for mounting is pinch the hot or black
take it down and inspect the wirew you are shorting the black to the grd or neutral.

be very careful

When you turn it off-?, sounds strange. Probably the switch is shorting inside or wrong kind of switch. Better get it replaced.
