if you have a yahoo messenger.. edit your picture there - that serves as your avatar...
or you can log to your regular INBOX; yahoo inbox. from the welcome screen of your email, you should see your picture or avatar there ... if it's a regular gray silhouette- click it and pick your picture..
then now you can change your smiley icon to your own avatar...
