I don't know.
I have adored Ecclesiastes before but now I find it incomplete.
I have adored Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy but now I find it doesn't explain a thing.
I have read many other books on the topic, like Deepak Chopra's quantum physics explanations, or Conversations with God series, and many others as well, all they seemed to be meaningful when I read them but later their meaning almost disappeared when I grew up by discovering new things and experiencing new feelings about the world and myself.
Now I reject most of the common knowledge because it really gives you a base where to start but you should continue your searches independently thereafter, either approving the common knowledge or finding something completely different.
And that's what I am doing now.
Still searching the Truth.
P.S. Books Can be inspiring but not obligatory telling the Truth. Nevertheless, you may try reading 'A Wizard of Earthsea' by Ursula LeGuin - this is the deepest book covering the question about the Meaning of Life I've ever read.

There was a philosopher who wrote a book called Ecclesiastes. He noted that there was a time for every activity. a time to mourn a time to be happy. A time to make war and a time to make peace. A time to be born and a time to die. a time to love and a time to hate.
He also noticed that bad things happen to good people and that good things happen to bad people.
Once more, he noticed that animals and people all return to dust the same. You can't take nuffin with you. So he concluded the best thing was to live with integrity, to worship God and enjoy the simple things in life.
He put it like this:
"However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all. But let him remember the says of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is meaningless ... Now all has been heard, here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil"
What's it's saying is - don't strive after stuff that's pointless, but keep your eye on the end game, which means life's got a spiritual dimension. So live as though God's watching - because He is!
After all, life on earth's pretty short. If it's not about a spiritual dimension, to be honest it's pretty pointless!
PS: Ecclesiastes is part of the Bible. You may want to try it some time. It's full of really useful answers.

Life in and of itself has no meaning. You must give life meaning. A simple way of doing this is to leave this world better place than when you entered it. This gives your life meaning. If the woman known as Mother Theressa had not given up a life of wealth for a life of service would her life still have meaning or just not as much meaning?
I know that this is simplistic, but to expand further I would have to write a book.

I'll also say 42,
but I'm referencing Moby Dick's Chapter 42 - The Whiteness of the Whale.
basically, there are many possible meanings, it is all based on our individual experiences and perceptions.
We may very well each exist for an exclusive, individual reason.

Life is a stage. You have to actively participate in it. You may be shy but still the play goes on. People remember a bad act as well as a good act. But they always LIKE a good act and if it touches their life they recommend the same to others. In the end THE ONE ABOVE us all judges us and decides our destiny. Hope you have a good one. Good Luck.
