There is this weird thing that catches rats and mice in a container and kinda... well... it electrocutes them. And you empty it without seeing the rat. Why can't you keep a cat? They'd work best, the smell of the cat would keep them away.

There are some machines that emit a very high pitched sound. The mice and rats get bothered by it and leave.
I checked the search engine and some are sold on ebay.

they sell all kinds of lame sound emiting deals but they don't work. You can try traps but they get wise to them very quickly. Poison to me is your only help. We got some field and ditch rats in our house and they were a real problem. They were stealing food from my dog kennels. I tried traps and caught a couple even tried glue traps they would put insulation and pieces of paper on them so they could walk across. I finally poisened them and they were gone in a week. I did not see or smell any but one that died outside. Alot of times when poisened they freak out anf usually run outside to get air and fresh water.

A 12-gauge shotgun with rat shot is most effective. And probably a little less messy than a chain saw! suject to local laws and regulations

There is a device that you can plug into wall sockets that keeps mice, spiders and other things away. I can't recall the name of it but I know I've seen them on ebay.

it's called a broom... use it to clean up messes. Messes attract rats, people with rats ask lame questions, which gives them less time to clean.

it's a vicous circle!
