That won't work. The unit would put out as much hot air as cool.

RE:
Can a window air conditioner running inside the house (not in a window) be a safety hazard? If so how?
Im renting in a condo complex and the central air does'nt work and the landlord won't fix it. I have an older window unit from my previous apartment, however the condo association doesn't allow window units. I want to try running the window unit in the upstair hallway with the...

I am in the air conditioning business and what most people posted is right. the air coming off the condenser is warm, it is the heat being displaced by the boiling of the freon in the evaporator, to put it in layman's terms. The added heat of the friction in the fan motor and compressor would then add more latent heat, so it's a downward spiral. The exaust going through the air return would pump it right out the vents for the central air, it is not exaust but return air that cycles right back through the system. Get some flex duct from a large home improvement store big enough to fit over the back, some duct tape to seal it, and throw the duct out the window and tape it all around. You won't be in violation since you don't have a window unit hanging out the window and it might actually get your landlord off his ***.

OK, here's a brainstorm, may work for you. Take some waxed cardboard or insulation board and make rectangular duct that is shaped to direct the hot air out the window. Use Duct tape on the corners and make sure that the a/c is set up so that the water drains out the window sill. The A/C won't present any chemical hazard because you are just exchanging air. Hope that this helps to keep you cool....

I agree with everything the others have said, except, that I do think it is a health hazard. Air Conditioners do emit some air polutants. They use freon, which shouldn't leak, but who knows? In any case, I would be concerned not only about the heat it puts out, but also what's in the air that comes out. Our houses are already poluted with Radon and who knows what esle, don't add to it, especially if you have small children, animals or people with any type of breathing problems. Do whatever you have to do to make the landlord fix the A/C. I am a landlord and would not hesitate to fix the A/C.

its not a hazard, but it wont work properly. it will blow hot air out the back. they do make indoor air conditioners that sit below your window and have a small panel with a tube to it that you put in the window for the exhaust. the panel that would go in your window is only a few inches wide, and it doesnt hang out, so its much less obtrusive.

Unless you pump the heat outside it will do no good to run it that way and it will actually make your house warmer because of heat from the motor. The return air just recirculates through the house.

You need to send the landlord a certified letter stating that your central air unit does not work, and the if the problem is not fixed within xx number of days, that he will be hearing from your attorney.
This will usually convince them that something needs to be done right away.
If he still doesn't fix it.... find an attorney.
