Technically, the thing that started this was something that happened last Wednesday. Hezbollah snuck across the Israel border, attacked an army post, and kidnapped two soldiers. They wish to trade these soldiers to free some of their people in jail.
Israel said they won't do a trade deal. They don't want to start a trend of soldiers getting kidnapped. So they're going after Hezbollah to get them to disappear.

officially the war started after the Hezbollah kidnapped soldiers only a week after kidnapping another soldier.
unofficially it was just a war waiting to happen, both sided were looking for a reason and pushing each other fuses until everything just snapped.....
well let's hope for the best

Hamas captured 2 soldiers in the West Bank. Israelis kicked a.s.s.
Hezbollah wanted to show support for Hamas and starting firing rockets into Israel. It has very little to do with religion at this point.
