Defintiely "The Shining."

That movie still scares me. The images he uses in that film really enhance the feeling of cabin fever and the fact that Jack Torrance is losing his mind.

The great thing about Kubrick was that he actually directed very few films. I love almost all of them.

Considering how few films he actually made and the quality of every single one of them and the fact that all of them are so completely different from each other in story and genre, it's hard to pick one as a symbol of his talent.

When it comes right down to it people can make strong arguments for Barry Lyndon (gorgeous cinematography - like Citizen Kane, every cel is a photograph), Full Metal Jacket (honest and more real than most war films), Clockwork Orange (terrifyingly distopian in the most amazing way), The Shining (just plain spine chilling - those two twins.../shudder) or Dr. Strangelove (pure comedy with a strong message behind it). But let's face it, 2001 is the only film that everyone agrees on.

It's a fantastic story, has that classic Kubrick sense of timing, amazing visuals (let's face it, that shot of the bone to space station is the greatest single transition shot ever). It's a drama, a thriller, a sci-fi, mystery and special effects movie all in one. It's also one of the few films Kubrick made which is relatable to a mass audience (though being accessible to a mass audience isn't necessary for being his best, it should be taken into account that it does make it a film stronger in making a point than a film many less people see).

So to answer your question, 2001 is his most representative work (his best, if you will); but it's not necessarily going be everyone's favorite - mine is The Shining.

Depends on one's taste, doens't it? Kubrick made some really great films. Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Shining, Clockwork Orange.... Personally, I like Full Metal Jacket the best. Also think "Eyes Wide Shut" was his worst.... A.I. was pretty horrible, too, but I don't blame Kubrick for that mess...

I hated Eyes Wide Shut - boring and pointless, although the cinematographyy was beautiful.

Dr. Strangelove. Brilliant satirical look at the Cold War. If you want to explain to future generations what the COld War was all about, this would be the perfect film.

"You can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"
