When I was a teenager, my periods were not very regular (one every 4-6 weeks), but I understand that's not unusual. A bit over a year ago I started taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, which made my periods extremely regular; 28 days exactly, and they usually even started at the same time of day. I was on this medication for about 5 months. Then I got a different job, which didn't have health insurance, so I quit taking the pills. Ever since, my periods have been getting further and further apart! The first couple months they were 6 weeks apart, but now it's up to 8 or 10 weeks between periods! I don't really mind not having a period as often, since they're just a pain, but I worry that when I eventually want to have kids I won't be able to.

Has anyone else had similar effects after discontinuing this medication? I also should mention that my parents tried to have kids for 10 years before they were successful (with the help of medication), so infertility might run in my genes.

I don't really want to be on the pills anymore- I've found a different contraceptive method I like much better.

Also I don't have health insurance, so I'm not really thinking of seeing a doctor about the issue soon- I just wondered if I'm the only one, or if someone else has had similar results.

Ms. Mystery- let me know how your Dr. appointment turns out! I'm interested to know what he/she has to say, even if it may or may not be exactly the same issue as mine.

Yes! I am going thru the same thing right now. I was told by some friends that sometimes your hormones are a bit low. And going off birth control pills and other changes affect that. I actually have a Dr. appointment in a couple hours to talk to my Dr. about this issue.

Ok. I just got back from the Dr. She said its mostly likely one of two things- 1) my hormones are just messed up and she wants to put me back on birth control to even my periods out. 2) she thinks I may have a thyroid problem and sent me for lab tests. Apparently the thyroid controls hormones for the menstral cycle and changes in lengthening of the cycle are linked to hyperthyroidism.
I wont know till next week what it is. I have no prescription coverage with my insurance so I hope its not hyperthyroidism. I would suggest that you go to the Dr. too now. Good luck!

I used to take Ortho Tri Cyclen and did not have this problem. However, I was fairly regular before I started taking the pills. I don't think a longer time between periods is necessarily a problem. In fact, you've got girls today who are on the pill 24/7 so that they skip their period completely.

I would suggest asking your Ob-Gyn about your situation. I'm sure they'd have a better answer for you.

I take it now but I had regular periods before I started so I don't know exactly what's normal once you get off the pill. I've heard it is not unusual to have irregular periods after getting off of the pill but because you had irregular periods before you might want to see your doctor to make sure things are ok. If you don't have health insurance, try to find a low cost medical clinic.
