If the Allies had to invade Japan the death toll would have been in the most horrific the world has ever seen. The Japanese military death toll in battle after battle points to this.
We, who do not have a direct memory of that war, should keep in mind that the tally of American dead was so large that after so many years of fighting we were desperate to put an immediate end to it.
We wring our hands over the death toll from the Iraq war, It doesn't even compare with the carnage of the Second World War.

The difference between today and the time that ended WWII is that the US does not believe that they are in a fight to survive. We fight wars now thinking that victory is inevitable. So, we do our best to limit innocent deaths. In fact, we limit our capabilities and devote so much time to this goal, that we have now lost the will to project power quickly and win in a matter of hours. (Of course now more nations have the same capabilities as well.) The use of an atomic bomb is so demonized that international bodies can make leaders war criminals if they used 'em.
In WWII the US leadership and people honestly didn't know that they would win the war. So they did everything they could to assure victory. Firebombs were used prior to the atomic bomb...but no surrender was near. The US stepped it up a notch and it took TWO a-bombs to assure victory.
So...summarizing...three points: The US thinks it can't lose, the international community would come down hard on the US, and in the past, we had the will to do whatever it took to win (like our enemies do now).

The big event in the history books that caused Japan to surrender were the two atom bombs dropped on their country. The other factors are footnotes that are not emphasized so much.
FDR made a secret journey to meet with Stalin on the island of Malta just before the end of the war. Roosevelt was shocked when Russia pulled out a detailed map dividing the world into two spheres as the spoils of war. The rising might of Russia was a factor in President Truman's decision to use both of the only bombs completed and imply to the Russians we had more.
The other factor is Germany was close to finishing their version of a nuclear weapon. In fact, you can search Wikipedia for U-235 about an article. A German U-boat surrendered at sea with nuclear material. The German's log stated two Japanese military officers committed suicide when the radio message came in that Germany had surrendered.
It was a different world with different priorities in 1945.

Your question is not funny at all. I agree with it, anywhere, at anytime, there are innocent people dying or/and in prison. They are all victims of hating, discrimination, and unmerciful actions. All the way around the world. Nobody can hide it. About the atomic bomb, there was a war. I am not saying that I agree with it. But I am saying that the people who had the "bright" idea of the atomic bomb, the president who signed the authorization, and the pilot who dropped the bomb weren't OBVIOUSLY thinking. I completely disagree with wars, there are always other methods of solution. NOW, FOR A SECOND, FORGET THE ATOMIC BOMB AND THINK ABOUT THE "WORLD TRADE CENTER" 9/11/2001. All the people there were innocent people too. Our sons, wives, husbands, cousins, uncles, grandmothers, daughters, etc; but now they are all resting in peace.

The problem is... if the US were to use the atomic bomb NOW, other nations and their allies would have the ability to retaliate. This would result in mutually-assured destruction.
By the end of WWII, the US was the only country that had successfully developed the atomic bomb.
It's as much a strategic and self-defence concern as a humanitarian concern.

The ending of the Pacific conflict and the unwarrented attack on the United States was not resolved by " the Bomb", in fact Japan was preparing an honorable way of surrender when the firast bomb was dropped. The "Bomb" was a show of force and power to the World who were all juiced up on years of war.
It was a clear warning to Russia AND China to settle down.
As for using the bomb in todays society. The opportunity of our historical enemies to retaliate on behalf of a rogue nation is high, and in such continues to fall within President Reagans catch phrase of MAD...Mutual Assured Destruction.

No, it was not necessary but USA had to test its bomb anyway in a war situation!
By the way, who says the World War II has ended? In fact, it continued and is still on in many pockets of the world, waiting to flare up on a massive scale and then for someone to term it the World War III ! We are not far off from that situation!

It sure got the Japanese' attention. Innocent people always die during war, that's what war is all about, unfortunately. We would
drop a nuclear bomb today, and all hell would break loose. WW3

specific i think of it grew to become into mandatory to drop the atomic bomb. Japan grew to become into going to combat to the final guy, in addition they reported (allegedly) that if any distant places troops set foot on jap soil they might kill all the prisoners of conflict. they might not have finished that probability in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it had to be seen. a good sort of folk lost their lives whilst the bomb grew to become into dropped yet a good sort of lives have been saved i.e. prisoners of conflict have been released and arranged to come again domicile. Japan did not accept as true with the Geneva convention so as that they taken care of prisoners of conflict like animals or worse. on the top of the day those prisoners have been OUR people who have been being starved, crushed and labored to loss of existence. I might desire to assert that I do desire that yet another atomic bomb isn't dropped, i think of as quickly as grew to become into sufficient. it fairly is my opinion and that i'm valuable that there'll be others who strongly disagree yet that's what a debate is all approximately.
