I am a girl and I love basketball with a passion. I can't lie though, I started watching basketball to get this guys attention. I would watch sports center in the morning before school and ask him things like did you see that shot by so and so. But after doing that for about two weeks, I really started to love the game. And now I'm hooked. Its a great game. Unlike baseball. damn that crap is boring. (sorry to all my baseball fans, its just my opinion)

Basketball is a sexually symbolic game. Putting the ball through the basket is symbolic of sexual intercourse. So naturally hetero boys like it.
Badminton is symbolic of spanking your shuttlecock, so most boys avoid it like the plague.
Volleyball is symbolic of slapping a buttcheek, so it gets some fans,
Soccer is symbolic of kicking someone's butt, so it's very popular among people who like to do that.

Its like how girls sterotypically lik epop stars and celebrities. It is their way of trying to fit into a group of people that they want to be like. If you don't want to be like a basketball player though, that's just fine cas I sure as hell don't want to be Britney Spears!
