i have a california king snake ....black and white banded..its a male snake , about 8 years old .i noticed he was very active...so i went to get him a couple mice...when i returned he had grabbed his own tail and swallowed it...he is 4.5 feet long and he has eaten about 2 feet of himself.... i figure he will let go soon but he has been this way for over 36 hours...he is still breathing and still working on swallowing his tail.... do i leave him alone or is there a trick to get him to let his tail go....king snakes eat other snakes..even other king snakes so he probably thought his tail was prey..

You need to take him to your exotic animal vet immediately. Constrictors (this includes CKS) have long feeder teeth that they use to push their prey into their throats. If this snake has been eating it's tail for that long he has most likely punctured his skin and may be bleeding. Also, snakes' digestive systems are designed such that they begin to digest their food before it even reaches the stomach. If your snake has had two feet of himself swallowed for over 36 hours then it may be too late. You should have taken him to the vet if you couldn't get him to let go after 30-45 minutes. Go! Now!!

take him to the vet. he should know that it's his own tail. i'm sure he can feel that. either pinch the sides of his jaw and make him let go and pull it out, which might really piss him off, or get him to the vet

if you can't get it out yourself I do suggest a vet. I have seen corn snakes do this from time to time and they are usually found dead. You may get his mouth open enouph to get him pulled out of himself. He won't do it himself. A vet will probally have to slip some kind of metal spoon around his body to slip it out. Good luck.

When your snake runs out of himself to swallow, he will stop. OR you could cut his tail off and let him finish and grab his tail when it comes out the other end. ;p
