When the Internet was original set up, there were several catagories of web site created.
.com = commercial
.net = network
.gov = goverment
.mil = military
.edu = educational institution
.org = non profit organization
As one has enforced the names, a commercial business could register as a .org or a .edu and nobody would stop them. So the names dont' always mean what they should.
So a .com should be a commercial website, while a .net should be a network (such as a company Intranet).
