When humans first began wondering about the earth, the sun, the moon, life, and death there were those who seized on the opportunity, with stories (mythologies) and explanantions. And those that believed and trusted them bonded together. And these developed into religions with concepts of God, with mythological figures and mythological explanations, with prescibed behavior including sacrifices to appease their God or gain favor with God, with all kinds of views of life after death and how to gain it.
Some religious leaders discovered the power they could wield over people particularly in the behavioral dictates, with taboos and other requirements, ie: fasting, food restrictions, worship rules, clothing rules, rules for penance and so on. Religious leaders also promote evangilizing, teaching that their religion is the only way, and all others are wrong. Some ecourage their followers to stamp out other religions and wage wars to do so.
Religious zeal has led to intolence of others' beliefs. and all that is descibed above, if you would look closely, you can find in the religions today, Catholics vs Protestants, Jews vs Islamics, Hindus vs Muslims and so. And the intolerance gets worse when religion is allowed to mix into government.
One of the objective of all religions should be to advocate and teach human behavior that will optimize human happiness and fulfilment individually and collectivley, ie integrity, honesty, dilgence, faithfulness, tolerance, stewardship, mercy, caring for others, pusuing justice and peace.
You are correct it should not matter what you believe as long as you are a decent person. And as a decent person you should not care about what others believe in as long as they are law abiding.
However in the United States our constitution provides for religious freedom and you, as a decent person, should care when the government starts legislating around the beliefs of a particular religion, ie public prayer, faith based initiatives, teaching creationism in the schools, squelching stem cell research, preventing government aid and support for family planning in other countries, packing the Supreme Court to override Roe vs Wade and so on.

Because most of the people in this world are mentally blind and blank when it comes to religion! Take any conflict between countries as an example, you will notice religion as a major reason behind it. Only when we get rid of all religions and turn the whole world into a secular one can we have peace!

I love discussing religion because I grew up in a Christian only area. I'm Catholic and the Protestants always told me how wrong my religion was and that I worshiped a God other than Their God and was going to hell for it. I like to learn about other religions so I don't end up like those closed minded.
I just like to be informed on the other religions so I can figure out what I truly believe.

Well, you ask most Christians and it does matter. You ask EVERY Muslim and it does matter as well. You got the right idea, we should start a church that says having good morals is your only rule to follow. Believe anything you want, but just be a good person and you are doing right by God.

Because many people on this site think that others religions (or lack of same) determines their political point of view.

And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews." "National Brotherhood Week" by Tom Lehrer

I think a lot of the qauestions aren't really questions, but the misguided prosthletizing to others.
The real questions are asked by people who want real answers, because regardless of how much someone tells you they believe in their religion, there is always doubt.

Very true...but humans have this need for others to believe exactly as they do or else!! We shouldn't care about what other people do or do not believe in unless you want to get to know that person.

Indeed. I think people just want attention. Seriously, i don't think Yahoo! Answers is the best place to ask your deepest, most profound questions about religion lol. I agree with you entirely though, people should practice "live and let live" and not try to push their beliefs on others.

I totally agree with you. A separate answer section for religion will help for preaching one another. Why should one worry about another man's belief. It will save time for others to go in for open section.

You hit the nail on the head.....and I think you should send this to the Yahoo staff so they can remove the category completely.
