We often hear Americans in a flap because petrol (gas) prices are at an all time high. When I tell them that we pay 3 or 4 times as much in the UK, they usually say "Yeah but we drive several times as far in a year, in the US". I don't think there is a great deal of difference in UK/USA average car milages. Anybody got any accurate figures?

When at work (driving the BIG trucks), I turn roughly 175,000 miles per year. That equates to roughly 27,000 gallons (100,000 liters) of diesel per year.

When at home (driving a normal car), I turn roughly 20,000 miles per year. That equates to roughly 1,000 gallons (3,800 liters) of gasoline per year.

United States driver, here.

I am retired and have a 94 F150 that I bought new. It has 100734 miles that's about 8400 miles a year My son lives 35 miles from town and drives it 6 days a week, so he drives over 25000 a year. It's hard to pin down . I would guess it all depends on the distance you live from work. I also would say it's almost 4000 miles from ocean to ocean so if you travel from coast to coast it can add up in a hurry.

25 miles to work,
25 miles back home,
12 miles shopping running errands
---------------------------------------------
62
x5
----
310 (add weekend stuff)
+25
-----
335 per week

so

Bout 17, 420 a year...don't know if that is less or more, but remember most Americans are bitchy and only care about ourselves.
