You don't. There is no way to know. From your question I would suspect that you have reason to doubt the person you are talking with. I would say trust your guts. If they are saying not to trust, then don't. Better to error for safety...
If you decide to mean someone, do like my daughter's did
My daughters both meet their husbands through a Christian dating service. After an while online with each of the guys, they decided to make a "foursome date", so that neither girl was alone with a strange guy.
After a couple date, they both decided they didn't really like the guy they were dating - but they each got along great with the OTHER guy. So they swapped. They were married in a double ceremony two years ago.
So you never know....

You can't really trust anyone right off the bat.
If you get to know the person overtime and maintain a close relationship, then you're more likely to realize if they're real or fake.
I've met several people in-person from online.
I have no idea how old you are, but you'll need to exercise careful judgment.

I know of at least 2 young ladies from China who met their American partners via the internet. After the initial "how-r-you" emails the Americans flew a zillion miles to China to meet up with the ladies - this is one concrete way to gauge the sincerity and the honest intention of the person-on-the-net. Besides this, I would be 1000% careful of words, photographs etc etc via emails - trust has to be earned, proven.

You can never be sure until you meet them. That is how on-line predators get to their victims. I'm not saying everyone is like that but you should be very careful. Even if you ask for a picture you can't be sure what you get is really them. And if you decide to meet someone you met online, be sure that you are not alone when you do it. Take someone else with you and meet in a very public place.

Don't give anyone your real name or address. I would not even give them my regular email address out of yahoo answers. There are many perverts who pretend to me kids on here so don't listen to anyone that tells you to do something that you know is not right. When I meet someone on a singles line I check them out through the church system as I only want to meet someone from my religion anyway. You can't be to careful when on line and your instincts may be wrong.

you can never really know if someone is telling the truth. but.... you can trust your instinct. and sometimes that fails ppl 2. but honey, you shouldnt start liking someone you met online.... especially because they will end up being from some place in west india, south africa, or ireland or some random place like that. (no offence to anyone from any of those places!!!)

I don't believe you can really trust someone you haven't met in person and got to know. Even then some people cannot be completely trusted.

you don't know.
I'm a 48 year old women and mother of 2 adult children. prove I'm not.
Or- I'm a 37 year old man with a beer problem. Prove i'm not.
Or- I'm a 69 year old retired garbage man. prove I'm not.
There is no way to know.
The only people you can really trust to be who they say they are on line are the people you already know in life.
