I have a 2002 Cavalier. Started fine mid afternoon then idled rough and shut down. Started again and was fine. Few hours later went out to start it and it wouldn't start. Its cranking but won't turn over. Have plenty of gas. What could be the problem? Fuel pump?

Could be anything...probably electrical in such a recent model. Ring up a small garage and ask for some advice, or ring a mobile mechanic who you know is reputable...

once you swap the most to commence it what takes position? a million) no longer some thing takes position? (lifeless battery?, free battery cables, or it isn't any longer in "park" each of how.) 2) You listen a "click", yet no longer some thing else? (free battery cables, undesirable starter, undesirable starter solenoid, or damaged engine) 3) You listen the starter turning, notwithstanding the engine would not turn? (low battery voltage, undesirable starter or undesirable ring equipment on flywheel/flex plate) 4) The starter turns the engine, notwithstanding the engine received't start up? (out of gas, undesirable gasoline pump, plugged gasoline filter out, damaged timing belt, no spark) 5) The engine turns over, yet very slowly. (susceptible battery, worn starter, out of engine oil) 6) the engine turns, yet there is an undesirable banging noise? (some thing is damaged contained in the engine) What exceeded off very last time you drove it? a million) Drove abode superb very last nighttime, only received't commence on the prompt? 2) changed into making use of superb, and it only died on you? 3) you've not pushed it in a lengthy time period. it is been parked in storage? eliminate the air filter out and spray some carb cleanser or taking off fluid interior the intake and crank it. If it starts and dies, you've were given a gasoline challenge. If it would not commence, you've were given an ignition challenge.

if its the battery it wouldnt crank at all. you can generally hear the fuel pump kick on. turn your key to the on posistion and see if you hear a winding noise for a second. if not, then spray some starter fluid in your throttle body, and have someone else crank it. if it starts an then dies right away, then i am 99.9% sure that its your fuel pump. also my grand am did this to me once. it wouldnt start cause it went into theft mode. that was fun. i had to reset the pcm. it took about 45 mins, then started right up.

Look at the IACV (idle air control valve) it is on the top of the engine on the intake...If your local auto shop has pictures of parts on their web site you can look there to see what it looks like...And no it's isn't your battery or alt... If the car is turning over fine it is more that likely something else.. And besides if your car is ideling rough that has nothing to do with the battery... If that isn't the problem it is more than likley fuel or emissions...

Rough idle and now no start? I would start by replacing the gas filter before replacing the fuel pump

could be one of several things
first buy a new fuel filter
if they clog up your car wont start
second, and you'll need help for this,
pull a spark plug wire and lay it next to the engine block.(don't hold it)!
have someone turn it over while you watch to see if your getting a spark! in not you may need a new cap/rooter. maybe even new Ignition module..while your messing with the plug wires check that their all good.
now if none of those seem to be the prob
you may have jumped timing
to fix that you'll need real help and the proper tools.
good luck

Sound like the computer going bad or your Starter. I have a 90 cavalier and it did the same thing and it turned out to be the Starter. Is it and automatic or stick?

Could be fuel pump. Could also be a bad module. Check to see if you're getting spark. The same happened to me with a Celebrity. If you have headlights, you have battery, and no amount of jumping will start it.

First thing I'd try is Jumping it (make sure cables are connected and free of corrosion)
If that doesn't work, and you have AAA or another service, call them to get it started. They will probably be able to tell you what is wrong with it.
