Their aims:
1. To eliminate Israel, to blot it out of the map.
2. To install an islamic republic, probably a pan-Iranian republic on Lebanese soil.
Why can't Israel and Lebanon work together:
1. Israel's stupidity: Lebanon, with a sizable Christian population could/might be a key ally in the region.
2. Long history of Syrian intervention in Lebanon that weakened the Lebanese infrastructure and governance capacity.
3. Previous Israeli forays into refugee campgrounds on Lebanese soil.
4. Unwillingness on the side of Israel to recognize the social and political identity of the Palestinians.
5. Hard to understand internal divisions in the Arab world. For instance, right now the Arab nations are happy with what Israel is doing because it might keep Iran at bay, while Lebanon pays a high price.

Hezbolla has already explained this to anyone who cares to listen. Very simply, their aim is to destroy Israel and all Jews. Unfortunately, with the help of Iran, Hezbollah holds the balance of power in Lebanon. The Israelis are not "working against the Lebanese". They are simply doing what they have to do in order to keep from being annihilated by an enemy that fights dirty and that won't quit until one side or the other is wiped out. After 70 years we all finally know who and what Adolph Hitler and the Nazi moverment were. Why are some of us too stupid to recognize Hezbollah and radical Muslims for what they are?

Hezbollah is a political organization that was set up to assist the Shia muslims who are mainly situated in the south of Lebanon.Following the previous Israeli invasion of Lebanon, these people were driven north, which forced a major civil war with the other religous factions in and around Beirut. The territory of Lebanon is in a crossroads containing people of diverse religous and political beliefs.Although Lebanon has a government, the amount of control it has over the various denominations of it's citizens is very tentative. The only way to have complete control over Hezbollah [the Shia population who were originally armed by the Israelis] would be to utilize a dictatorial government similar to that employed by Sadam Hussein. And look what happened to him !.Unfortunately, the Lebanese government and the majority of its citizens are in a no win situation. The Israelis are totally aware of this situation but for reasons of their own, they choose to disregard it and continue with their bent of destruction regardless of the cost in human misery.

Hezbollah's aim is to destroy Israel and retake Israel's land. Lebanon is starting to come around to the fact that they need to work with Israel to eradicate them. They haven't up to this point because Hezbollah has infiltrated the government and they wanted to prevent civil war. They are learning now that you should never accept terrorist groups and never try and reason with them. These groups want one thing, and that's to kill anyone they see as not one of them.

fadia's answer to dustin's question is very good. But, I would just like to point out that when defending your country with war, you aren't looking for 1 to 1 casualties. They are trying to defend themselves in the most efficient and humane way possible. Which will unfortunately include civilian casualties. Powerful countries with the upper hand often take advantage of oppurtunities to defend themselves. From their perspective, the kidnappings undoubtedly signalled an end to some precieved cease fire. So, now they are taking care of unfinished bussiness.
Unfair? Well, war is not fair or perhaps, suffice to say any attack not specifically designed to kill civilians is clearly fair. Do I like it? No. Do I understand it? Yes. As far as prisoners go, I'm betting that Israel is getting tired of releasing large groups of prisoners it has captured in return for a couple of captured Israelis when they know the militants pretty much kill rather than capture, and capture just to recoup there losses to capture.

If it weren't for Hezbollah defending the Muslims, the Israelis and Bush's Nazis would have taken over already. It just pisses The Fuhrer Bush that someone actually apposes his quest for Global domination for oil and profit.

To kick out the Jews and give the country back to the indigenous Palestinians.
Of course, they have no earthly chance of succeeding, but it is an effective means for the Israeli government to get $billions from US.

Their goal is total extermination of Israel and anyone who supports them.
The Lebanese government won't do anything because they are scared of them (remember the Taliban in Afganistan?) and they are intertwinded with the government. I am sure if they could get rid of them they would.
