As indicated, many US citizens are evacuating from the continued waring in the middle east (Beirut and Lebanon). What is the attraction in that area and why do people stay there? I would have boogied on out of there years ago!

U.S. companies have been participating in Lebanon's multimillion-dollar reconstruction drive that started by 1997 .
with assistance provided by the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme and the United States Agency for International Development

Many of the visitors are Lebanese who have taken U.S. citizenship, who visiting their families, or or Americans of Lebanese descent, working at places such as the Lebanese American University in Beirut.

There are also a lot of American companies working in the 'reconstruction' of Iraq , For example:

"After overthrowing the previous Iraqi government, the coalition forces have sent aid to restore electric service knocked out during combat. The Associated Press says that electrical power generation and distribution, curtailed due to combat operations and sabotage, has been restored to above prewar levels. German firm Elbe Maschinenbau has signed an agreement to build three new power plants in Iraq, and three new ones have already been completed in the Anbar region".

Lebanon is a beautiful country and if you've never been there you don't know what's it all about.
Politicians are destroying it in a struggle for power and land which is a shame. And in case you have not heard yet, plenty of Lebanese live in the USA and have residency or citizenship here in the states but they still have family in Lebanon and they go back to visit them during summer time.

It's a nice place to visit and people of higher education are there to spread knowledge. I'm pretty sure the peacecorps is out there also and they deal with a lot of aspects of life.

There's an estimated 25,000 there now and some 8,000 should be out by this weekend. Some are trapped in rough spots and have to stay in sheltered areas.

You're right about Beirut. Getting out and staying out of there is should be a welcome sign for that city.

In the spring, the State Department stated that any trips to the area should be carefully considered for their necessity. (In other words, don't go unless you absolutely have to.) They also urged people to sign up with the Embassy, and many people didn't.

"The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling overseas."

I am glad we helped people out of there, but it really irritates me that people don't want to pay anything towards that effort. They weren't going to have to pay right then, but I think they should share in the cost...

We doesn't have had to take care of the airport from the Israelis, we may have had to take care of it from the Arabs. If we may informed the Israelis, "good day, we are taking our human beings overseas between 6 AM on Tuesday and eight PM on Wednesday," the Israelis doesn't have bombed it in the time of those hours. The Arabs, in spite of the indisputable fact that, may have killed each and every American that were given interior of 10 miles of the position.
