i agree with you completely... i study classical music, i listen to jazz, and i play in a rock band... it's the best of all worlds... the thing is though, it all has to do with upbringing, to a certain extent... if your folks don't listen to it, then chances are you will never be exposed to it... there is nothing wrong with a little bit of culture every once in a while... but, what people forget is that classical music has managed to survive many many many hundreds of years.... there IS a reason for this: because it's very good... i don't think anyone will remember Shakira in 40 years. (and that's being veeeeerrrrrry generous...) The other reason teens don't really get into "classical" music is because of the "McDonald's/I WANT IT NOW" life style.. no one has the patience any more to sit through a piece of music that is longer than (shock horror!) 10 minutes... that's why sitcoms are 20 minutes... short attention spans... i don't know if i'm making any sense... but this is how i feel...

I agree ! some teens need today need to learn more about the history of jazz and classical and the blues before hip hop and r&b. Those were the type of music people use to dance at balls and night galas! I love jazz! and classical music too!
Without that how can alica keys, nas, shakira and brittney spears have gotteb their inspiration from? plus some of theyre music has classical music blended in with rap and pop. for example ememnins "forgot about Dre" has an orchestra and Christina Aguleria new son "aint no other man" has a 50's doo wop theme to it. So the point is unless u know your music history you dont know where you are going unless you know where u came from!

I agree, I'm 19 now but I liked it as a teenager, I seemed to be the only one though. I even had a saxophone, and still do, but I'm just do impatient and have to short a temper to learn how to play it. I also like the calm, soothing effect jazz and classical music has over me. I listen to it and I chill out, something thats hard to do with other genres, don't get me wrong I listen to them all now, jazz was what really made me experiment, and try out different tastes of music. Heck if it wasnt for the mellow sounds of Jazz and Classical, I would never have given music like Bob Marleys the time of day. And his music is the best for chilling, period.

Many people do not learn an appreciation for jazz or classical from their parents or from the movies/tv/media that they watch and read. Unfortunately some people do not know how to think for themselves, either, especially in high school, and they have to do what it is 'cool.' However, life is very different after high school and college, and being online can help you connect with others your age with the same interests. I minored in music at college and was able to find many others with similar interests there.
If you are serious about music, check out arts schools, or make friends with people looking at arts schools.
As for the other people, don't count on them changing. People that age can be insensitive.

unfortunately most teens are dirven by peer pressure and so that has a lot to do with it, also they probably have not been exposed to it, so you can't like what you don't know about.
You may have better luck with people that are involved in music like band or orchestra because they are generally used to playing those type of musical pieces.
check out yahoo groups to see if there are groups you can join to discuss your favorites.
you also may try inviting one of your friends to maybe a jazz festival, and see if they like it.
Don't worry - tastes mature as people age so others will catch on too, then you can rest assured that you were ahead of them.
maybe set up a music discussion group - kind of like a book club, but different people might bring different types of music and discuss it.
good luck

I agree with ya, in my teens I loved anything that wasn't mainstream and I still do. I'm 22 now and I still don't listen to anything that isn't older than me..lol I don't really dig classical, but jazz is awesome and really jazz is the mother of all forms of music now in my opinion. So...no your not weird just different...

I am not teen now, but I always liked classical music, or some of it, in my teens, and I learned to really love jazz by my late teen (it was an acquired taste for me). Don't give up, classic and jazz music are very good, and I can but commend you on your taste :))

I LOVE jazz, and classical. I play the saxophone and the piano and love to jam out. I used to play all the time but I've been busy... Yeah, many teens seem to be driven by mainstream media and all the other bs. It's hard nowadays to find "Real" music or "Real" musicians. Just like movies, they got lazy and just take an old classic Chaka Khan, or Earth Wind and Fire and resample it, then a rapper want's to talk about all his bling, how many cars he has, how his pee pee gets hard in the club, or use the same instrument and beat in all 30 of their songs (lil' John anyone?)--it's the same trash over and over and over and over...How many different Shake yo @ss songs do we need?!
"Shake yo tailfeather"
"Drop it like it's hot"
"Back that thang up"
"Make it vibrate"
"Slow motion for me"
"Light that @ss on fire"
"Shake that laffy taffy"
"Shake it like a salt shaker" Just to name a few..
Geez, we get the point!
