Some people would say antiseptics. Prior to antiseptics millions of people died from simple germs, and during simple surguries. Once people learned to sanatize, live expectancy increased greatly, and fewer people died while in surgury or from common diseases.

This is a hard one. It depends on how you define best, as best could be moral, influential; likely not evil. But even evil is hard to exclude since the moral value of something is sometimes subject to its use. Weapons can help free nations, or aid in their oppression.

The Printing Press has been mentioned, and that might be a fair one to put in. I think I got a Best Answer for answering a similar question to this one when I pointed out that the printing press was voted the best invention of the last thousand years several years ago.

But you set your question for all of history. I can't decide. So I will submit that the greatest invention isn't a tangible thing, but ideas, thoughts and conceptions that led us to a new, maybe not always better, way of thinking. Mathmatic and logical reasoning, The Renaissance, The Age of Enlightment, etc. I believe periods of great thought, whether 3,000 years ago, or 300 years ago, are the best "inventions" we have.
