So, does that mean that you lead two or in fact three lives -- one for the public, one for ur family and close friends and one simply for yourself: the one only you know about?

Yes, that is exactly it, we are insecure people and we don't think that anyone is going to accept us for being ourselves, so we pretend to accommodate others. Not all people are like that and I think that as we mature, we are the same when no one is looking as well. It is insecurity that makes that saying true for some.

We all have many 'faces' we have to put on in order to make it through the day. The one for the public is most important to most people because they want to be noticed and admired. Then there are different ones for family, friends, spouses and kids. It could create a whole new world right there in your head. Scary. Wow! I have never really thought about it that much.

I think that's true only to an extent. Some people have absolutely no problem being their true selfs around whoever, regardless of the situation. Not like that's always a good thing as there is a time and place for everything.

Overall, I do think that people are always themselves, although the choose to limit/include certain facets of themselves in certain situations.

Honestly, when no one's looking, sometimes I'm looking at porn on the Internet or smoking a joint. Does that mean the real me is a porn head or a drug addict? Not at all. I just choose to bring different parts of myself out at certain times.

it means that when nobody is looking at u ,u become less consciousor we can say less fearful regarding your social manners.
for eg: if u r at home alone u know that nobody is watching u & hence u become less socio phobic & have your favourite things to do.
ofcourse it means that u got to mask yourself wen u r social coz' u cant behave like a crazy in front of others.

omg... i have thought about this issue many times and yes, some people act differently when they are with different people and in different places. (me). some people behave the same everywhere. i think that they are comfortable with showing everyone what they are really like. i don't know why but humans have this thing with wanting everyone to like them...

well thats what the term "wearing different hats" means pretty much. certain idiosyncracies and parts of your personality are only appropriate when you're with certain people or none at all.
