The Nebraska State legislature is the only Unicameral legislature in the United States. The word "unicameral" comes from the words, "uni" (one) and "camera" (room). Thus, the Nebraska legislature has only one "room" (or chamber).
The state legislature was not always unicameral. There used to be a Bicameral (two-room) state legislature with a Senate, and a House of Representatives. The legislature, however, was reorganized in 1937, with only the state Senate remaining. Thus, Nebraska state legislators are known as "Senators."

Unicameral means there is only one legislative body. The US and all other sates are bicameral--they have two legislative bodies.
