You can break your neck falling out of bed. She should go. It's a once in a life time oppertunity for her to learn and grow with peers. Not allowing her to go to this because of "world instability" doesn't make sense when you can die due to a drunk driver, or fall out of bed, or fall in the shower, etc.

This is something that will look great on her record, especially when she starts applying to colleges and such. The more things like this she can get in before college the better chance of getting into the ones she wants to (I know far time away but still). Younger people travel cross country by themselves. And if she takes a plan you can ask the stewardist to keep an eye on her while she is on the plane. You can't base your life on our unstable world. You will never see or do anything that you really want. The big question, Does she want to go?

This is a great opportunity. I would see if there is a possibility for you to travel with her if she has not traveled much. As far as the school providing a chaperon, that is highly unlikely. This is not a school sponsored event, so they would not be liable for your niece. Someone mentioned how great it will look on her transcripts. If you have to pay for her to attend, colleges know this and won't look at it as such an honor. Having said all that negative, I would suggest she attend. I have had several students attend leadership seminars in D.C. and all have learned tons, had lots of fun, and the programs were well run and safe!

dont worry too much she wont be going alone. the school district wont send kids that young on a trip alone in fact they wont let high schools seniors go on their senior trips with out supervision. dont worry she will have someone with her probably a teacher she knows tell her parents to let her go this is a great experience

Well it matter. If you know people are going to be watching her and taking care of her. then don't worry. If you keep on watching over her like an hawk then she will either grow up with you supporting her through everything. Or she will get tired of you and start getting an attitude. so if you think she mature let her go

What is the program; NYLC? I went to a youth leadership conference last February, and I thought it was awesome. That particular program is safe/legit/etc. I don't know anything about any other programs, though.

I don't think it is wise for her to travel alone. Since this is a chance of a lifetime, and huge honor, I would absolutely go with her.

Depends on how mature your niece is and her mode of travel. If she is flying, there is a program that will take care of her. If she is traveling by bus, there is a similar program also. It just depends on how mature she is to travel by herself.

i think i know which program you are talking about, i might be going there as well... the point of the program is leadership, and stuff, parents aren't allowed to go. if you are talking JNYLC, if you aren't, let her go alone, it's a learning experience
