Teach them that they are good, valuable, worthwhile human beings so that they do not need to abuse or strike others in anger. That's not to say they don't need rules and guidance, they do but most of the violence (and willingness to tolerate violence) in this world comes about because individuals have a hole deep down inside them that they don't know how to fill.

I'm teaching mine the basics. No gender bias here. When I went back to work once they were all in school it occurred to me that I was working eight hours at the office and still expected to come home and cook, clean, do laundry, etc. I began enlisting their help with everything. Even a toddler can start learning to put away toys.
They certainly don't always use what I taught them, *laugh* but they know how to cook, do laundry, handle every possible cleaning task and deal with basic household maintenance. They're actually very proud of it.
One day while I was speaking with a neighbor, her son yelled across the street "Mom did you wash my baseball uniform? I need you to make a sandwich for me now, I have to be there in twenty minutes!" This kid is 17, also has two brothers and as his mother scurried away to help him my son said "She's running an ex-husband factory over there!" *giggle*

I taught my boys (now grown men) that honesty and integrity will see you through just about anything. Also love and understanding of other peoples' 'shortcomings'. Respect others and yourself. Take pride in who you are and where you came from. Never, never talk back but talk with the person who you disagree with. Be proud to be an American, even though it's not easy sometimes... especially these days. If the need arises and you are called to duty then you have an obligation to stand and fight for what you have. That's what this country was built on... the courage of our men. And now, our women.

We should be teaching our young men about responsibilities of being good husbands, fathers, partners, friends, and how to make their own decisions. I have a brother who joined the marines, only for my mother to talk him into not going through with his decision. He is now 23, it has been 4 years, and he has no job, no responsibilities, no thoughts about his own future, and is still living with my mother. So, if you say we are failing our young men, then there is a perfect example. My mother's selfish actions put my brother's life on hold. He found himself only to lose himself again. Yet is she willing to contribute to him going to college now and making a better life for himself? NO! So, in closing I will say that we as parents should encourage our young men (and women) to be all that they can be.

NO, there will always be war where there are people. Just like in your own homes or schools, aren't peopling fighting. We don't know how to get our point across without using force. It is sad but true. We are angry people with anger management issues. We love to suppress each other and use each other and in order to survive we have to fight our way out of the corner that others chose to put us in. I don't think it has to do with mothers, and if it does than father's has the same if not greater a responsibility of teaching their sons, how to communicate and get resolution without fighting.

Why wouldn't the governments wage wars inspite of the lack of a voluntary army? They would just do what they did before and force people to join. Personally, I am glad people are willing to join so the rest of us are not forced to through a draft.

You're implying that every mother in the history of mankind has "failed" their sons since there have been wars since the dawn of time. It is human nature, not something that mothers aren't doing right. I'd rather have a son who knows how to stand up for what he believes in than *******-out in the face of trouble.

And cant young men of today understend this???....
