I have lived in Haiti for the past 8 years. There are many problems in the country. Corruption being perhaps the most widely accepted reason for the continual decline of the nation.
I really feel that the root problem is a family problem. There is very little family structure in the country. Parents if a child is fortunate enough to have both are rarely if ever involved in the lives of their children. I have never seen a family of Haitians eat a single meal together. I have stayed with many different families and not once in my 8 years have I seen this. Societies that have strong family values typically have strong and resilient economies. The problem with Haiti must be resolved at a Family level and work its way up. As far as Help to the country of Haiti Dig into it and you will find that Just during the years of 1996 - 2000 The USA put over $2.1 Billion in to Haiti. That's Right BILLION. Your Hard earned Tax Dollars into the Bowels of Corruption.

Haiti is the first independent black nation in the Western Hemisphere. Unfortunately, it gains its independence through violence and has been dominated by it since. Nonetheless, Haiti and its people have a very rich culture, one that still retains a lot of African traditions (unlike black Americans who, unfortunately, were unable to retain most of their cultural traditions). Most of the Haitians that I have met are very kind, hard-working, and intelligent people whose only lament is that they cannot safely live in their homeland.
Haiti, like Cuba, is unfortunately run by leaders who have drawn the ire of the international community. As such, like Cuba, Haiti has been primarily left on its own, and the people have suffered for it. If Haiti can somehow stabilize, get rid of its militant factions, and ensure that those who need it most will receive resources, then perhaps it can become a thriving nation.
