I like the idea. If we live n a society where divorces are both common and accepted what the hell is the difference really, except for the fact that you would know up front.
It could also have the same effect on a husband as politicians. when they are up for "re-election" they would have to be all smiles and kisses.
I could have got out of my cell phone contract after 2 years but here I am with Cingular almost 10 years now. just because you can get out of the marriage doesn't mean you would

This is how the marriage system used to work.
in times past a marriage was for a year and a day and on the Aniversary you would renew your vows and stay for another year...
If you didn't like it you would move on...
Marriage as a 'life long' contract is a relatively new idea...
I say go back to the old way!!

Isn't marriage a thing that people who are in love with each other do?
Why would you put time limits on love then? I can't understand why people think of marriage as a thing that people use like some sort of business deal. This is possibly one of the reasons that there is so much failed marriage in the world today.
Maybe I am just old fashioned but I believe that marriage is for people who are in love with each other and who want to have a life together where they share their trials, experinces, feelings, thoughts etc etc
Have fun

That might work, but I do think that their should also be some required course work and test in order to enter into Marriage. Usually, when you get a license of some sort, some testing is required to see if you have what it takes to get it.
When the license is up for renewal, there should be some type of refresher course.

A true marriage is a lifetime commitment taken before God.
Did you not think about the effect a contract marriage would have on children? 5 or 10 years would destroy their security.
A child needs both parents.

I don't see why not. It really is quite a brilliant idea. Would help more people to get marry without the scare of committing their whole lives. You'd know the duration and be able to work harder if you want a renewal.

A marriage is a union between two people or things.
To offer temporary contracts on marriage would detract from its validity. If people are not sure they want to stay together long-term, then they shouldn't be getting married.

Absurd, marriage is a union which is suppose to last forever. To institute such a policy means that marriage is nothing more than a business deal. It is bad enough with the pre-nuptual aggreement couples are now signing, now you want to further degrage the institution of marriage?

No.
I think society has the wrong view of what marriage is supposed to be. Right now its viewed as a disposable inconvienience when things start to get hard. Marriage is SUPPOSED to be a life long commitment. That means WORK.
Dont get me wrong...Divorce is a neccassary thing...for abused wives or husbands. But todays society is using divorce waaay to liberally.
