What is the actual worhth of an MBA in the IT field, am told that hands on technical experience is worth more than an MBA, and that MBA's are not recognised as adding much extra worth to your profile.

It can be if you want to make the change from the tech side into general management. An MBA gives you enough knowledge about all business areas to manage teams or departments made up of various specialist or to have a more overall picture of a business.

If you prefer to stay on the tech side then it would be a waste of time.

Having an MBA would allow you to diversify I guess. You could move away from I.T. specific roles and move into Operational Management for example.

If you have the time to devote to it and the money to fund it, I'd say go for it.

I know MBA's cost alot, but with any type of higher education and "that piece of papaer saying i've done it" it does open doors of opportunities that would normally be closed if you didn't have "that piece of paper".

Doing any qualification while holding down a full time(ish) job shows that (a) you know what your talking about/doing, and (b) that you are prepared to try and 'better' yourself.
