I can't really figure out why we have them but my inner voice is definitely not the voice of god!
Although it quite frequently takes on different accents or genders, or ages. This may seem weird but I don't seem to think it is, and its my inner voice so what business is it of anyones to argue! So there!
My inner voice isn't always my conscience. It is sometimes, but its also the one that eggs me on to do things too, and can be very critical at times.
I actually think that my inner voice is my true self. I have trouble sometimes connecting my inner voice to my outer voice and end up confusing people and saying do 'you know what I mean?' all the time!
I think you inner voice usually says all the things that you think and possibly you true opinion, but your actual voice works as a social filter. Although some peoples is a bit broken!

Interestingly there is not an inner voice, but despite that the concept exists. The inner voice is your brain generating ideas; it may or may not be your conscience, this depends on what it is saying! Be careful as 'listening' to the wrong inner voice can be hurtful or destructive; if that is the case then discuss this with a friend soon.

'Cos people would stare if you outwardly announced your secret thoughts... "My **** itches... beans, chips, and peas... should havegone to the toilet.... wonder if he fancies me? Kinda cute isn't he YUMMMMMMMMMM..."
As demonstrated by people with Tourette's Syndrome, this can be rather annoyinga dn embarassing.
So we have an inner voice.
Why have a voice at all?
Well, because working memory is at least partially dependent on the phonological loop, which is auditory rehearsal of a stimuli. For example, when attempting to remember a phone number we repeatedly say it to ourselves in our heads. It turns out that when we get distracted, and can no longer hear the voice, we lose the memory trace far faster.
Some studies within the realm of Psychology have indicated that deaf people too have inner voices, although no one is entirely sure how exactly they communicate. This suggests the inner voice is a crucial component.
The inner voice is essential because it helps us to plan ahead. We can discuss possibilities with ourselves, and it aids us in thought management and logical reasoning. This is one of the higher intelligences thought only to occur in humans, primates, and perhaps some other higher order animals.
I guess that's why anyway...

because sometimes you need to think outside of the box to get the right solution. If you are always thinking about yourself without considering others then you run the risk of becoming isolated. The inner voice can put things into perspective.

Hmmm... An inner voice...? For me that was my ex-wife nagging me that this should be done like this and not like this...
I listened to this "inner" voice at the start but it ended up getting me into more hassle then it was worth. When I started ignoring the "inner" voice my probblem was solved....
Hope that makes sense...

The inner voice is your conscience. Which helps to monitor and moderate your behaviour. Ignore it at your peril.
That`s why I am sitting here answering daft questions with daft answers and not lying on a sun-soaked beach in the south of France with a couple of dolly birds at my side.

Because we are all born with instincts and other characteristics that have been developed over time and are designed to help us survive and make our lives easier.
However, once we grow, we are taught that we shouldn't do things, that we should do others; we become social animals, designed to fit in in what the society around us is today.
The inner voice is this instinct that we have been taught to repress.
