I believe that when we say we die it is only our outer shell, our mortal body that expires. It has a limited shelf life depending on how we treat it during it's lifespan. What we are is energy. When people talk about auras they are talking about the part of our energy that is visible (to some) around our physical form. So when our body dies we do not. I believe we move on to wherever we believe we should go to. I believe most of us go to a place where all energy forms go to. People who have experienced near death experiences talk about going through a tunnel and seeing a bright light that they describe as feeling like a pure loving prescence. They go on to talk with maybe angels or God or Jesus or someone like their father, mother, brother....someone they loved dearly who explains a bit about why they are there and that how they must eventually return as it is not their time. These experiences cross all cultural and national boundaries/borders. The experiences are worldwide and eerily similar. Those who are traumatised or deeply emotionally unhealthy generally speak of a scary place, no bright light or love is seen.
.
I have surmised that in the end it is thought that governs where you end up. But I do believe that we are being looked after here on this mortal coil and guided to achieve the goals we set ourselves before we were born. Of course I do not have all the answers but I have no doubt in what I believe and look forward to feeling light and free. To not be weighed down by gravity and be free to fly like a bird. Of course life does not halt just because one is now an energy being. Learning and growth continue in various guises and even I cannot say all the forms they will take.
.
I hope I have not sounded too much like a flake. I just struggled for many years to make sense of what happened after we die and now am at peace. It took me much research, reading many books, talking to many different individuals, watching many relevant tv documentaries and years of serious meditation to reach these conclusions. I have no doubts anymore and I encourage you to keep on with your own search. What is acceptable for me I understand you must learn for yourself.
.
Good luck and remember the journey only makes the reaching of the eventual destination that much more satisfying.

One should not fear death as it is inevitable.
For this reason, we should live every day fully aware that it could happen at any time, to ourselves and those we love.
If you live with the awareness of death every day, the life you lead will be all the more rich.
To answer your question,
I think what happens when we die is we go to a different plane, but we are still who we are here, only bodiless.
We maintain all our awareness and personality, rememember who we were and who we loved and who loved us.
Everything we are within this physical body is still present.
I believe you are never alone when you die, even if in the physical sense, you may be. I believe there is always someone with you when you die, helping you from the other side.
I believe that even in the worst of circumstances, when death itself is present - there comes a moment when the knowledge of what is happening brings on the most incredible sense of peace.
I also believe that once we have died, communication with our loved ones is still a normal occurrence.
The dream state is very similar to the world we inhabit after death.
If you become actively involved in your dreams, you will become more familiar with the way things work on the other side.
Thoughts immediately become reality, for example.
I do not expect anyone else to follow or even understand my personal views, but they are my own because I have seen and experienced them all firsthand.
I would be a fool to deny all I have been shown.
The way I see it is, those who just believe dead is dead and that's it - are in for a big surprise!!
By the way - for me, this is not about religion at all.
I believe these things to be true for everyone, regardless of race or religion or what have you.
This is something that transcends all boundaries.

I think there may be something to reincarnation. It seems like as complicated as a soul is, it would be a waste to just discard it after 70 years or so. The Buddhists believe that we are reincarnated over and over again, becoming better or worse depending on how good we were in the previous life.
There are cases where reincarnation seems to be the explanation. For example, take the current Dali Lama. Each Dali Lama is believed to be a reincarnation of the previous one. Normally, the previous one gives some indication of where he will be reborn, but in this case, he died suddenly. Buddist Lamas fanned out all over trying to find the reincarnated Dali Lama. When they found the current Dali Lama, he was about three years old. He had told his parents many times that he would go to the palace where the Dali Lama lived. When the Lamas brought several items to him, he correctly picked out which ones belonged to the previous Dali Lama and claimed them as his own.

I think.. that when I die, if I was a good person, I will relive the happiest day of my life over and over again.. and if I was a bad person.. the worst. I don't really believe in a "heaven" or "hell", but I think that you'll be able to pick a day.. the best or the worst.. and live it all over again.. for the rest of eternity.. which isn't going to matter.. because you're not going to know anyway...
When I die, I am going to wake up.. as any other day.. and I am going to relive the most perfect day.. the day I was married, the day my son was born, the day my kid got married.. something.. and then I will go to sleep.. to wake up and do it all over again.. never knowing that it's already happened.

Who can say for certain as to what happens when you die? Religious people would refer to heaven, hell or reincarnation, depending upon their faith. Atheists would refer to oblivion, although it too could be considered a form of faith. Hence, nobody knows for certain.
It could be that we will be reunited with loved ones we've lost along lifes journey, indeed a scenario that I hope for, or maybe there is nothing after we die. In any case, it would be best to enjoy your life, as it is the only sure thing you have at the moment. Do the best you can for yourself, your loved ones and treat everyone with respect and kindness. That way, if there is a judgement day, at least you were a good person.

Pondering our own mortality is possibly THE most scary thing (besides cockroaches! Ew!), you are correct about that one.
I believe we either go to Heaven or Hell. (know you didn't want to hear it, but I'm not done yet) I am hoping that when I (I pray I get to go) get to heaven, all the questions I've had in my life will be answered. I envision a calm, peaceful, relaxing, beautiful place. Noone is hungry. Noone is in pain. Noone is angry or confused. We will see friends and family that we want to see and have waited to see again. I also hope to see my pets that have gone before me there. Some folks say pets can't go to heaven. I think God loves us and wants us to be happy and if having my dog there will make me happy, he'll see to it. :)
I believe we'll get to have a "welcome meeting" with God.
There's more - but I'm outta time. :)
Good thoughtful question!

Well, it isn't really creative but I think you just cease to exist. That's it, it's over. Nothing after this one, nothing was before. Hell's definitely out, because I live that every day. No hell, must be no heaven. We're nothing but water, a few chemicals and some electricity anyway.

"Nothing" it's not an option because nothing does not exist, my theory is that what ever survives it's pure energy and and simply changes container you cannot take your consciousness and most likely you can change dimensions. Depending on your evolution in this realm you might be able to advance to different and better planes or realities that we in our present state can't even perceive. One thing is for sure: it's a one way ticket.

my theory:
when a person dies...and realizes that he/she's gonna die...a hell lot of secrets open up in front of that person...
he sees everything differently...gets a different feeling...mixed with pain...pleasure...excitement...sorrow...anger...and everything...
on one hand he feels very sad and shattered about leaving everything and everybody behind...but on other hand...he is just baffled with what happens when he dies...he would get such mixed feeling...all with some pain as well...and surely...a time would come...thought the process...when he would feel total calmness and total silence...that's the time we call that he is dead...and that's time he would say...he learned all the SECRETS of universe.
