What in the world are you asking? Are you asking how many years a person should wait to see if their business is successful? Most new business's take at least three to five years until they actually start to bring in a profit. And once that happens, why in the world would you want to then quit it? Some people spend their entire life building a business and working within it. Some people have no patience and quit before the business can get off the ground. People and business's are individual. If you cannot give the time and effort to developing a business why bother - work for someone else.

I had a successful business of 35 years and sold. I worked 15 years prior.

If one can be successful and earn enough at any point, and maintain a reasonable profit, it may be marketable.

Your question is not what one should be asking at start up.

Concentrate on building volume and profit, controlling expenses, etc. Just make it successful.

I wouldn't make any hasty decisions until after year 6. Don't quit. You need a shot in the arm: get some motivation (books, tapes, church, seminars, etc.) and don't be afraid to ask for help.
