As you can see, there are a number of reasons.

One common thread that you can see from all the responses you've received is that this is a country of PLENTY.
When you go into the grocery stores there are shelves after shelves of food. There are so many choices, but the question is what to choose, and what can you afford to choose. This is a segue into the next issues: choices of convenience and affordability

As a country of mostly dual incomes (because things have become so expensive), we choose convenience - what mom or really has the time to cook for a family after working 8 hourse and commuting...etc. Unfortunately, with convenience, food becomes WAY over processed. No fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, fish...it's just so much easier to grab frozen-to-thaw this or that, a burger, call the nearest pizza place, etc.

This brings in the issue of financial ability. If a family (single parent homes usually) is not in the middle-class range, chances (but not always) that there is even more chance of being over weight. Being overweight DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN YOU EAT TOO MUCH!! What it often means is that one is not eating enought of the right kinds of foods. How is this? Consider the price of a low-fat diet meal of fresh veggies, meat and such to feed a family of 4 or 6. Then compare it to the affordability of rice, beans and tortillas (I'm Hispanic, so there's no lack of sensitivity) to feed a family of 4 or 6. The latter is much more affordable. Also consider very low income families who might get aid from a Second Harvest type of non-profit organization. The aid is not going to be able to be fresh fruit, veggies or meats. It has to be something that will have a shelf life. Unfortunately, that again means processed food.

Hope this helps!

There are those who have plenty of money but little time to do more than scarf down fast food. There are those with little money who use it to buy fast food and convenience food because it's the only pleasure they can afford. Some are too lazy to exercise and some are uneducated about the health related problems resulting from obesity.

In this day and age I don't think there is any acceptable excuse... you know what I mean... those who will say it's hereditary or a glandular disorder or they're big boned. I've struggle with my weight after having kids, because of depression and because of medication I was taking while undergoing cancer treatment and of it is just that an EXCUSE!

We all need to do three things: Get off our butts and get some exercise EVERY SINGLE DAY... Educate ourselves so that we can make healthier food choices... And take the money we save and donate to a charity or other worthy cause.

We have so MUCH in this country and could do so much GOOD with our resources and instead we tend to use our money and time to destroy ourselves bit by bit.

Actually...

It's not that Americans are the most overweight, its that we have the most fast food restraunts and restraunts with a lack of "healthy" food. Frankly I believe that the way to get rid of any obesity is to run just 1 litle bitty mile each morning, and to look at the sign at Burger King, So that you know that that "Double Bacon Whopper, Hold the onions" has 700 calories, and also to not only recognise that it is high in calories, but that it has a low protein value and high sodium content. The day that people realise that its not calories that matters, but proper balance of nutrition and exercise, is the day that we will have conquered obesity.

Btw have you guys ever been to mexico and africa, because i see more obeese people there than in america

Three reasons, two pertaining to relative wealth:
Calories are relatively cheaper here given the amount of work one needs to afford a given amount of food. So, price is less of a constraining factor in food quantity than other places.
Another, developed economies tend to place a high value on a unit of labor, so much that automation displaces most activities that used to require physical exertion. So, now people expend less calories, and develop less body mass that also expends less calories.
The third reason, thanks to culture and habits developed from lack of access to fresh food or sea-derived foods, most Americans from the central part of the nation are acclimated to eating high caloric grain and animal products that tended to store easier in the past, but again, in the past every activity required more personal physical exertion than now. So, you'll find that among Americans the heavier ones tend to be from the northern and further from the coasts.

There are of course other factors:
Americans have less incidents of serious health problems for their given age: less parasitic infestations for example.
American tend to smoke less, which is a fine way to lose weight via compromising your general health.
Americans tend to work more at their less labor intensive occupations-sitting at a computer does not expend much energy. It also makes you require faster access to the lousy food available from the nearest source so you can get back to work.

we are a country that not only depends on others but EXPECTS others to do everything for them. The democratic party has taught people to always believe that are vicitims and have no control over what happens to them. This led to complacency which has no become destruction to us as a nation. We do not believe in moderation in any form and food is the vice we turn to!

Americans probably make more money and can afford luxuries like dining out or ordering in more often. Most Americans are lazy as well.
