Steve Hackett. He invented right hand finger tapping, a technique using a volume pedal called "Violining" and has played some of the most gorgeous, heart rending solos ever. He is also an amazing classical guitarist, 12-String player and also dabbles with Synths now and again just to make us all feel better!

There is no *greatest* rock guitarist.
Aside from those mentioned - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Joe Satriani, B.B. King, Santana (excluding latest album), Garry Moore

The Edge or Dean Ween, I can't make up my mind. However it's all subjective anyway. This will just end up being amassive list of greats. I also considered, George and Eric, DeeDee Ramone, Jimi and others, but since U2 and Ween are my top two guitar bands I'll go with them.
