I'm going to award the points to Ashley although i think his date is slightly out. The official signing was made on behalf of germany in 1945. However at that point germany didn't exist. Germany only existed again when reunified. So thats when the war officially ended.

I don't know what you are talking about but Germany surrendered May 7 1945, VE day was May 8, Japan surrendered Aug 14 1945, VJ day was Aug 15, they signed the surrender papers on Sept. 2 1945. so what is it you are talking about?

The Japanese surrendered on 2nd Sept 1945, although the fighting did not stop until several week later due to the slow passage of information and order!

In europe it was 8th May 1945, Japan surrendered on August 15th of the same year.
