People have animals for companionship. I think as far as dogs and people are concerned, it evolved from the close working relationship that men and dogs had when dogs were used for hunting, guarding and herding in times where the dog's help was invaluable.
A man, like a modern day shepherd, would have spent a long time with just a dog for company to help him and to keep him safe.
Animals can have pets. Captive primates have been known to develop strong bonds with other species and many nervous horses become much steadier if they have a stable companion. This could be a dog, a cat or frequently a goat - for some reason horses and goats get along really well.
Some racehorses travel to the races accompanied by a non-equine stablemate.

we have pets because they give us years of companionship, love and unquestionable loyalty, most than we get from most mates or family members. Pets do seem to develop the same bond with other pets, dogs are pack animals and without another dog in the house will often look to the owner as the alpha dog or another pet as either the alpha or a under pack member. I have 2 cats and one dog that have lived together for 9 years, the girl cat is the alpha of the group and she runs everything! Even tho the dog is much larger he won't eat unless the little girl checks it out and either refuses it, finishes first, or lets him share. She will even get on the counters and drop food down to the other two, she is the hunter & provider of the group. They curl up all together at night to sleep, and she will swat at them if she wants to play or they do something wrong.

Many times especially with throughbreds and other breeds trainers will have a goat or some other kind of animal live with the horse in the stall with them, I don't think a pet is the proper phrase, they are used more as companions for the horses, it seems to calm some horses down. The horses do enjoy the company and can get worried if their companion is not there.

humans are group animals and need companion's of some kind.
also some people get pets as child substitutes.
they are to stop us getting lonely although a few sick people misuse them.
pets don't keep pets but will often get along with wild animals. my rabbit had a mouse living under the hutch, and in a zoo a stray cat moved in with the bares.

Humans have pets for companionship, nuturing, friendship and love. Taking care of them gives many people something important to do. Animals have "their people" are pets. Really, if you look seriously-who really rules the house?

I saw a St. Bernard on TV that had a pet bunny. Every day it would let it out of it's hutch, bring it a carrot, groom it, follow it round the garden, play with it, cuddle it, and gently nudge it back into the hutch at night. It was cute, but weird!

I firmly believe that my dogs think I'm their pet! Really, I beg for their attention, I fetch the leash, I instigate the walk and I feed them. We truly have a co-dependent relationship and I know I'm not the one calling the shots! Which is ok by me...

Yes, secretly we are there pets, that's why dogs are ahead of us when we walk them, they are walking us. That's why animals pee on your furniture, it's their furniture. Slowly, and secretly the world is being taken over by pets. Soon we will be their slaves.
