Just maby they know that attacking back will start something really big, which is probably what Israel wants. Then they will have a valid reason for this attack. It is just like Us attacking Iraq calming that they were harboring terrorists. Terrorists have no home land and if they do they don`t stay there they move around, that is how they remain a problem. Here we have it the world taking after the United States, God help us all. Soon we will all be so afraid of each other we wont even go outside. Fear is how the government controls us, we are more willing to pass laws that intrude on out rights when we are afraid. Like the patriot act, and that name who would be against it with a name like that.

if the Lebanese army was anything formidable they would get the Hezbollah out of Lebanon, They know that is where the problem lies. But they are too week to do it... we are talking about terrorists. (you are assuming the Lebanese are on the side of the terrorists and Israel did not attack the Lebanese, the terrorists are launching missles from homes hiding behind women and children and innocent people). People who strap bombs to young adults and kill the innocent. The Lebanese want the terrorists out. The answer is to let Israel take care of the problem and crush that group of terrorists. And then let them take care of Syria and Iran. This should have been done a long time ago. Isreal won't play political games... let them do their job and stop the killers of the innocent.

Israel receives annual aid of US$ 4 billion from the US plus god alone knows how much military hardware. Lebanon's per capita GDP is only $6,200 compared to Israel's which is $ 24,600. Lebanon has worked very hard over the last 20 years to re-build their devastated basic infrastructure. Israel has spent the last 20 years building its defence and military capability.
Lebanon can do very little against Israel's might. Even Hizbollah is a guerilla force by comparison and not an army. Hizbollah's strength is the fact that they hide in busy residential areas. This helps them to hide and ensures civilian casualties which makes it publicly embarassing for Israel, they hope. If Hizbollah attacks openly, instead of from residential areas, they will be wioped out because they are faced with a vastly superior might.

The Lebanese Army is tiny. If they retaliate against Israel, then the Israelis would have the "world's permission" to invade the country and destroy the Lebanese.
The Lebanese support the Hezbollah so they will not attack them.
Give it until the western countries have evacuated all of their citizens and then either Hezbollah will release the hostages or Israel will eliminate Hezbollah. The later will not be pretty but it will be another victory in the war against terrorism.

Because they don't stand a chance the Lebanese army only have around 70 000 ground troups & approx 350 tanks at their desposal. Conscription is in place in Israel meaning joining the army is compulsory, there maybe 2 - 3 million people available for the armed forces at the moment which would easily out number Lebanon.

Because as half the Lebanese government is Hezbollah so are a large part of the army! So they would not have obeyed orders to destroy their own. Well some of them might, but most of them wouldn't so it would have been chaos. Which indeed it is.
But Israel will sort it out, they NEVER lose, and it already looks like the Hezbollah leader is dead as no one has seen him for 4 days since the Israelis bombed the HQ they called a mosque!

There would only be one option open to Lebanon. That would be to attack Hezbollah. If the Lebanese army such that it is were to attack Israel directly it would be all out war. Trust me when I tell you that whether you like Israel or not, there is no denying that they know how to fight a war, and possess the equipment and will to do it.
