I came home on Sunday to find all my food spoiled.
i cleaned out the fridge. unplugged it and left it for a day.
Plugged it back in and it worked again for 2 days. Went hot again.
I repeated the same process and now it is working again, what would cuase this?

There is a reason the motor of a refrigerator is guarantied for five years. That's how long it will take to kill it if you don't do one thing..... that's clean and vacuum the motor back and bottom. The fridge sucks in air to self cool at the same time it sucks in dust that will clog the intake system. When you unplug your box, it cools. Better to clean it underneath. It also needs at least an inch on all sides for air to flow. If you do this once a year, it will fill up a vac bag and you can get 30 years out of a box. Stores won't tell you that.

A repair man is always useful in situations like these, but since most of us would like to save some money you could probably do a little troubleshooting. The fridge is usually cooled by taking the heat from the inside and moving it to the outside of the fridge. It is normally moved to the back of the fridge and this area needs to be keep well ventilated or it won't work very well. Another idea is ice build up on the inside. If the thermostate on the inside of the fridge is covered in ice then the fridge doesn't know that it is too hot, because it has ice all around it. This can be caused by humidity in the air coming into the fridge and condensing on the thermostat or water all over the thermostat when you clean the fridge. The only other ideas I have would include a repair man so good luck.

I've had this problem. Your refrigerator is not going into defrost mode at all and that causes ice to build up on the cooling coils and the air goes around them instead of through them. That's why when you unplug it for a day it will work again for a couple days. The ice melts off the coils and the air will flow through them again. At least for a couple days like you said. There is a switch on the coils that makes it go into defrost mode that is bad. Don't attempt to repair this yourself. Have a qualified refrigerator repairman service the refrigerator for you.

...the cooling fan could be out...

it circulates the cold air around and if it is out the coils freeze up and the fridge will do as you experienced

...this problem is probably one of the cheapest to repair- there could be a worse problem/ more expensive problem...

good luck

Hi,

Your fridge might be switching itself automatically into Defrost mode, or the refrigerant in the compressor might be leaking, rest you know what to do :)
