Start identifying yourself as your new nickname. When you call someone, say "Hi, this is Meems", when they answer. Sign all your correspondences to your friends whether it's email or written with your new nickname. It will take them a while to catch on. They may even ask you why if it's a stretch from what it is now...but just be patient. Eventually it will stick.
Good luck. Oh, and pick a good nick name you can live with for a while. If you try to change it too often, they might just start calling you Sybil : )
