Why do I bother with these Land of Eng twits? Go read the history of the game. It's "association football" which differs from rugby football, Gaelic football, Aussie Rules football, "American" football and "Canadian" football. Your Lang of Eng football has NOTHING to do with kicking a ball with your foot, it's they lopped off the "association" part. Soccer comes from the "soc" part of that term.

Also, all these forms of "football" are called thus because they are sports played ON foot. Way back in the 1800s, sports were played on horseback (i.e., fox hunting, jousting, esquestrian crap, etc.). To differentiate the term "football" was used to encompass all games played with a ball that you ran after rather than used a horse to chase after.

By the way, genius, it's called soccer in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Japan, too. I also think it's called soccer in Korea, but don't quote me on that.

Honestly, you should be more concerned at how boring your football has become in 2006. Let's rewind to the '70s and '80s when soccer was fast and exciting and players actually could shoot.

Yes, and I don't know why, either! I live here in the US, and it makes zero sense, that we call this 'other game' of ours football, when to the rest of the world, that word refers to what WE call 'soccer' and that really IS dumb since apparently no other country even uses the term 'soccer'. Or do they...?

I guess our 'football' is too utterly important, here, for folks to change course and rename it something else. It is a stupid game anyhow, not nearly so good as rugby even is. I mean, I cannot watch, for the boredom of all the stop-action business! It happens every few SECONDS, and becomes extremely irritating!

I know that Australia has their own version of what we call 'football' only I do not know what they call it. I wonder if they use the term 'soccer' to refer to REAL football?

Because in america we were all raised with the fact that football was played the way it is played here..It is the best game in the world I might add.We call that silly *** game the rest of the world likes soccer,why....because that is what we were raised calling it. They really should callit boring people to death,,why is the score always 0 to 0. The best thing I saw during the world cup was when that fool let himself be talked into head butting the italian guy..What do you expect from such a boring game. Also I call it soccer and I am not a bastard. And as far as when england created things before america was even here you need to get use to the fact that england USE to be in charge,,

They call it Soccer in Australia, Ireland and I've seen the word 'soccer' published in very popular English newspapers such as The Sun and The Guardian.

I know here in Australia peoplee are gradually starting to call it football rather than soccer.

There are so many different games played here that people tend to refer to them all as football and then elaborate if people want to know. soccer, AFL and League (rugby league) or union.

Well as you can see by some of the answers that people have given you. Americans call it soccer because they are stupid arrogant a** holes that can't see past the end of their nose.

because they call American football "football", and the right football hadn't been nicely time-honored to the final public till at present. that is a u . s . the position people nonetheless do not use the metric length. you may want to not assume them to do each little thing interior a similar way as some thing else of the international;-)
