Ukraine is a former Soviet republic which became independent after the disintegration of the soviet union. Geographically Ukraine lies in the European Continent. From a geopolitical point of view Ukraine is considered an eastern-European country.
As of 21/ July 2006 Ukraine remains an independent country.
Ukraine is not a member of the European union.

Ukraine is an independent country in Europe (Europe is a continent!). It is not in the EU and there are no negotiations going on right now about it joining the EU, although I know Ukraine is interested in applying for EU membership sometime in the future. That will be at least a few years from now though.

Ukraine is independent and very likely to become an EU member...and its on my list of places to visit....
Remember, "Europe" is a continent....like North America. In North America we have independent countries....and in Europe there are independent countries too.

Ukraine IS an independent country AND it is part of Europe.
It is not a member of the European Union, though. But even if it was it would have been still independent.
